rad person of the day!

I have been a big fan of Andres Gonzalez for quite some time, as with a lot of my rad people. His project entitled Ukranian Winter is absolutely fantastic. Some of the images are completely breath-taking while others are completely odd. He has a really wonderful palette in these photographs, which also has a lot to do with the location. Take the time to look at his work, I promise you wont be disappointed.

25 Random Things about me.

25 Random things about me.

1. I refer to myself as IMDB on a daily basis, as my infinite knowledge of unknown actors and actresses is uncanny.

2. When I was in the 7th grade I used to write in my journal with highlighters and stickers, and would write as if i was actually talking to someone. But really I just didn't have many friends.

3. Still to this day I'm obsessed with dinosaurs and often dream that they are real. I know one day I will be able to ride a stegasourous. Positive.

4. I have to have ice tea everyday (Arizona or Snapple) or i feel cranky for the whole day.

5. I play video games everyday and own every system. I used to want to design video games, but realized I would never have the patience for it and playing them is so much better.

6. Stevie Nicks is a god to me, and I listen to Fleetwood Mac more than anything else.

7. One of my biggest fears is being attacked by cockroaches. When I was maybe 4 or 5 my dad brought home an action figure of an Alien from the movie. It had moving parts, and when the mouth opened roaches swarmed out of it. I'm pretty sure I peed my pants.

8. Speaking of fears, I still have to sleep with the door open or light on when I sleep in other places because in my head monsters are real.

9. I hate when people talk about things they don't really know about, but just want to make conversation. Or just want to be a know it all. Probably my biggest pet peeve.

10. My name was originally supposed to be Quentin. Quentin Pfluger is probably the worst name ever. I'm glad I'm Ryan.

11. I used to collect Pokemon and Magic cards. I have no shame, I like fantasy things. Which includes anything from Dragons to Unicorns. Legend is a great movie.

12. My first tattoo is a tramp stamp on my back and is an ode to my favorite X-Men character, Gambit. I'm thinking of covering it up with a giant portrait of him instead.

13. I have a scar on the back of my head from being shot by a bb gun. The person who shot me went to jail for 6 months. He thought it would be funny to shoot someone.

14. My best friend to this day, Katie Degraff, tried to push me in front of a school bus when we were in the 4th grade. I still make fun of her about it today.

15. I have extreme social anxiety and make fun of myself in large groups in order to feel comfortable. I often am scared no one actually likes me and talks about me behind my back.

16. I prefer giving gifts instead of receiving them.

17. Despite my troubled childhood, my mother and father really are two of the strongest people in my life. I wouldn't be as headstrong as I am if it wasn't for them.

18. I hate hate hate when people mispronounce my last name, or call me miss on the phone. I really don't think I sound like a lady at all.

19. I used to have a cat named Ben and he was pretty much the worst thing in my life. Feral cats are no fun to have in your home.

20. I get sun-poisoning almost every year and I never learn. Last summer when I was in Italy was one of the worst. My face looked like swiss cheese.

21. I secretly think Jason Mraz is really sexy. That's right I said it, get over it.

22. I hope one day I can live in the middle of nowhere with Trina, preferably near a waterfall. I like country sides better than cities.

23. I minored in Asian Studies in undergrad and attempted to learn Mandarin for two years. I failed miserably. I hope one day I can be fluent in multiple languages.

24. After being vegan for about two years, I got very drunk and ate half a Tollhouse Ice Cream Sandwich. I tried to hide it in my freezer but Kyle found it and still makes fun of me about it.

25. I cry during movies and television more than I do about real life. Especially when it comes to things about love. Grey's Anatomy still manages to make me cry at least every other episode.

sale of the year.

Well I got my luggage back from Delta finally on Tuesday. However, one of my strobes was broken and my tripod was as well. I'm not sure when I will get a reimbursement check, or if I even will. I've had a lot of expenses lately and don't really have the extra cash to fix them immediately and would like to. So, from now until Sunday I'm offering 8x10 prints of anything off my website for 55$ which includes shipping (60$ for outside the US). These will be artist proofs.

ryan@ryanpfluger.com is the email you all know and love. Please email what you are requesting, with the image attached. Money can be sent to the same email address through paypal.

I also believe artwork should be accessible to everyone and I think the price reflects that. While not a gallery print or size, these are still beautiful C-Prints. So yeah, hopefully you can get something you like.

Thanks for the support.

I'm Yours...

So I'm very excited because my boy Nate is coming back into town next week. Finally. As much as I like Detroit, I like when he is here. Especially cause I have a partner in crime to eat really good vegan food all the time. Otherwise, I just make a lot of food, or order a lot of food and eat it all myself. Too much winter weight. This picture really is how Nate is - fun all the time.

I was thinking about Johnny the other day. I was watching Nick and Nora again, and it made me wish I could hang out with him. He's one of the coolest guy's I have ever met, as I've written before, but I just needed to state it again. Great conversation, great smile and just a really kind person. I'm surprised I haven't run into him recently as he lives in the neighborhood.

Jo-ey is finally back in town. I haven't seen him in forever - and I'm kind of sad he isn't the photo editor of OUT anymore. Although, Annie Chia who is, is an amazing amazing editor and person. I love working with her. I just miss working with Jo-ey. We are getting together next week and I'm really excited to see him. I'm going to give him the biggest hug ever. That's for sure.

So this week has been filled with errands, errands and more errands. I've gone to the bank twice, the post office twice and the grocery store three times. Dropped my book off at MORE magazine, as I may be working with them soon. The new photo editor there is awesome, and is a big supporter of my work. She used to be at the Times. I ordered my new mailers, and should be getting them on Monday, they are pretty awesome, and I'll show them here next week. Been trying to catch up on my television, from LOST to Lie to Me, but don't have the energy to after all the movie watching last week. I will probably get to it this weekend though.

P.S. Please check the post after this for a little bit of info on a one time occurrence, at least for awhile.

UARTS

So while I was away I got this in the mail and got very excited. I have the pleasure to show at UARTS down in Philadelphia in March. It's also really great that I get to show with Mona Kuhn because I really enjoy her work. If you are in the area during that time you should come by and see the show, as it's some very old work that I will be showing.

Flashback Monday!!!

Double the pleasure, double the fun. So, you get two flashbacks this week, since I didn't do one last week during Sundance. The first is me playing the trumpet. I really loved playing it, and picked it up because my uncle did. I actually used his trumpet after he passed away. I still have it in my closet. The one below is me at the grand canyon during my visit to my mom during my freshman year of college. It's still crazy to me that this photo is about 7 years old. I could stay at the Grand Canyon all day. It's probably my favorite place in the US.

glamor shot.

I was attempting to take a picture of me and trina cuddling. However, she is so black, that all you can see is her two eyes on my macbook camera. Basically she looks like a hell hound. So instead, I took a glamor shot for all of you. I think my posing skills are a little rusty. I like when my hat makes it look like I have a beehive, or look like a smurf.

this is what i want....

All i want is for someone to send me these for valentine's day. These are probably the most amazing cards I have ever seen. My obsession with Law and Order is pretty unhealthy. Love a crime show. I sometimes wish my everyday life was an episode.

Check out Brandon's site. He is so awesome. Anyone that makes artwork based off Law and Order is a class act in my book.

i wish i had a sweet disposition at the moment.

Well, I usually don't like complaining on here. This isn't as much complaining as it is a story in which I'm pretty angry. So I left Sundance this morning, and decided I wanted to take the earlier flight. I managed to get on it, and was pretty excited about that. I wanted to be home as soon as possible to Trina. I had a layover in Baltimore. My flight from Baltimore ended up getting stuck on the runway for about a hour. About 10 minutes into us being in the air, the hydraulics went out. It was pretty much the scariest thing I have ever been witness to. The plane was screeching and bumping for the rest of the flight. We were met on the ground with about 20 emergency vehicles and then towed to the gate. To top it all off, my luggage was lost in Salt Lake City and they have no idea where it is. It had my cameras and equipment in it. Basically sleep is my solution, and I'm hoping tomorrow I will miraculously find out where my stuff is. Cause right now it is in the void of airport world.

Thank god I got Trina. She is already sleeping on my stomach, and it is making me feel so much better.

500 days of summer.

I saw this movie today, and it hit me really hard. AND, Joseph Gordon-Levitt introduced it. He looked amazing as always. Pretty much everyone should go see this when it comes out in July. It's not a love story. It's a story about love.

p.s. The music was amazingly fitting from The Smiths to Belle and Sebastian. The trailer song is by The Temper Trap and is called Sweet Disposition. Download, it's great.

quitting smoking.

So I'm stocking up on a few packs of cigarettes before I leave Utah tomorrow. Then, it's over. No more smoking. It's gonna be running and exercise on demand, and no more hacking when I get up in the morning. I'm so over it. It didn't help any that almost every movie I saw during Sundance, one of the main characters was a chain smoker. It's a new years resolution a few weeks late. But better late than never.

oh boy!

There is no other way I would have wanted to spent my saturday night.

rad person of the day!

I emaiedl Bryan Schutmaat last week, because I really really enjoy his work. He is in the Collectors Guide To Photography with me that I posted about earlier in the week. He has a really great vision. His work is kind of spread over various websites and his site is under construction. But, just follow the link below and then browse around to find more pieces. He is really quite wonderful, so take a few minutes of your day to look.

SO FRESH.....

Wel well well. Sundance this year is making me very nostalgic of last year. I really love Utah. I remember that I got really excited for Bruce LaBruce's new movie, and then I ended up photographing him for OUT. I found this photo of him, that I never edited, and I absolutely love it. Bruce LaBruce, taking over the world.

I've also been super emotional lately. I love someone very very much, and am completely comfortable saying it for once. I don't know what kind of love it is, or how it happened, but it makes me smile all the time when I'm feeling real crummy. I 'm just really grateful to have that in my life to whatever extent it is. I don't know, it's nice to have someone in your life that you genuinely care about, and would really go out of your way for. I've really been re-evalutating my friendships and life a lot lately. How I interact with people, the importance I put on certain relationships and all that jazz. I think it's good to do that every once in awhile. Puts things in perspective. Oh life.

Two more days here, and then back to Trina. I can't wait to snuggle with her again.

MOVIE TIME

Paper Heart So, don't get me wrong, I love Michael Cera and I love awkward romance. Yet, the mocku-mentary feel of it slightly bothered me. It was enjoyable though, however not my favorite I've seen so far. There were definitely some cute moments, especially with the interviews of the real couples. Of course it continued my thought process on relationships and my past and all that jazz.

Arlen Faber I absolutely loved this movie. Total sappy romantic drama/comedy. However, the cast was amazing. Lauren Graham, Lou Taylor Pucci, Jeff Daniels, Kat Dennings and Olivia Thirlby. You can't go wrong. Jeff Daniels was amazing as a hack spiritual writer. Lou Taylor Pucci looked damn hot with his beard and scruff hair playing a recovering alcoholic. Olivia Thirlby in a big plush outfit that looked like a spine. GENIUS. Yeah, I kind of love this. Also Jeff Daniels collected monster figurines and it reminded me of my ridiculous collections.

mystery and misery.

Donald Glover -

I got really excited today when I realized that Donald was the star of Mystery Team, a film that is playing at Sundance. He is probably one of the coolest dudes I've photographed and I can't believe this shoot was over a year ago. I posted this picture before, but it's the only one I have on this hard-drve at the moment, and I wanted to write about him. I'm seeing the film tomorrow, so I'll let you know how it is.

p.s. Bruce and I just attempted to go in the hot-tub. I wanted to smoke cigarettes and be outside in the snow, and feel like I was in a movie. Turned out the hot-tub was more of a luke-warm tub. I started hyperventilating from the chlorine and nicotine and realized maybe I should finally quit smoking again. Just saying.

UtAh! God, I'm tired.

Sorry friends, no flashback picture this week. I'm in Sundance, and didn't really prepare for my weekly blogging. Above is me about 10 minutes ago, and the road leading up to our lodge. I'm looking a little haggard but it's probably because I've been up for about 24 hours with little sleep the day before flying in the am. It's 4 am and I am working on deadlines and am going to pass out very very soon. But my trip so far is awesome. I think my love for movies, trumps everything else I enjoy.

I can't wait to show the photographs from my most recent shoots, but I have to wait until they are published. My personal work is still being kept under wraps until I get more than a few images together of the new work. I figured I'd throw in a picture of Ben I found while editing old photographs on the airplane in the interim. His body is sick. I still can't get over it and I took this a year ago. I still get surprised with the amount I photograph sometimes. I find hidden gems here and there when I actually start organizing things and completely edit a shoot and archive it. Usually I go through 2 or 3 pictures I like and then the rest is put on the back-burner for months.

So I saw one movie tonight, and I absolutely loved it. You can always count on a great drama film here at Sundance. The movie was called The Vicious Kind. It starred Brittany Snow, Adam Scott, Alex Frost and my favorite, J.K. Simmons. Adam Scott is genius in this film, as I've loved him since playing Jennifer Lopez's gay best friend in Monster-in-Law. His character, while at first seems despicable, becomes someone you actually care for. I related to him a lot. The movie is filmed beautifully, with a really incredible moving flashback scene. Alex Frost is always nice to look at. J.K. Simmons has the ability to deliver lines like no one else. He to me is a highly underrated actor. Speaking of him, I can't wait for The Closer premiere.

That's all for now ladies and gents, till tomorrow, enjoy yourself.

Hopefully miraculously something will come up for me to shoot while I'm here, as there were a few shoots I missed because I couldn't get here in time.

Steal this Book!

Ok, well you can't steal it. But you can buy it, as there are a limited number of copies reserved for the public. If you want to have a piece of some of the most creative, exciting emerging photographers, this is what you need to buy. It's a pleasure to be included with such good company and good friends. Also the people who curated this book are completely wonderful. Anyway, I think this is a must for anyone who is interested in photography. The link below is where you can find out how to order it.

I've been a fan of Adam's work for quite some time. It's always nice to have love for a fellow New York photographer too. Also a fellow New York Times Magazine photographer. Anyway, take a chance to look at his work and learn about him. As always. It's worth it.

i'm not done.

Sometimes you are lucky and get a guy who is so easy to shoot. I just got back from my fashion/editorial shoot from this morning. After we were done, I pulled Edward off to the side to do some quick shots of him to show off. He is a beauty and super sweet. He's still in college right now, but does modeling for Re:Quest when he is on breaks and what not. I think he is great, and you should too.

sleep it all away.

So I'm not gonna lie. This week has been exhausting for me so far. Tomorrow isn't making it any easier. I have been shooting everyday since Saturday, and while very glad I'm working, the lack of sleep on top of just getting better from being very ill isn't a good combination. I like doing fashion stories sometimes, like the above photo which I enjoy. So speaking of, I have a fashion-type thing to do for a new client very early in the morning tomorrow. So, I am going to head to bed. I promise to do a real update tomorrow when I have more of the mindset to make coherent sentences.

Don't worry. I'm going to talk about Damages, American Idol and all that good television stuff. Also, will tell a great story regarding my bad karma it seems when it comes to electronics. Oh and some great new photos as well.

Till then, enjoy your Thursday.

xoxo

Flashback Monday!!!

Oh prom! I don't even need to say anything else. That hair though, what was I thinking.

uh huh her.

While not my favorite song, because my favorite is Say So, I love this video. Fake unicorn... enough said. Download Say So if you haven't heard it before, it's awesome.

janky?

So Alexis is officially the first woman that I have photographed for this ongoing series of portraits. I do have to say, I really love how a female face interacts with the rest of the men I've photographed. I'm definitely going to do more. It also helps that she is gorgeous and extremely interesting to look at. Love my girl.

I don't think I mentioned on the blog that I spent some of my new years at Christian and Brad's apt. Wonderful wonderful hosts. It was a good time, despite my anxiety of being out on new years. I was also with my girls which helped facilitate the good times. I really love this picture of the two of them. I just made a print actually this weekend of it. It's intimate and sweet and all that stuff that I care about. True that.

So this weekend definitely had it's ups and downs. I had a really great magazine shoot on Saturday and got to spend time working with people I totally enjoy, which is always a plus. However on my way home, while getting into a cab, I lost my phone. I'm not sure if I left it somewhere while putting my equipment away or if someone took it, or what not. But it was nowhere to be found. So a few hours of being on the phone with costumer service and insurance, a new phone will be delivered to me on Tuesday. For now I am using this janky phone I bought Kyle when we were dating back in 2004. I'm just happy it works and I can be in contact with the rest of the world again.

I have a super busy shooting schedule this week, and I'm excited about all of it. Other than that, travel arrangements are being made for my southwest trip to see my folks, new kitchen furniture will be bought and movies will be seen. It's a good life this week.

MOVIE AND TV TIME

So I'm not going to make a super long Golden Globes post. Just 5 of my favorite highlights.

1. Anna Paquin winning for True Blood - that's my girl!

2. Colin Farrell joking about his past coke habit because of his sniffles.

3. All my other favorite ladies winning - Laura Linney, Laura Dern, Kate Winslet and Tina Fey! Clean sweeps girls. Good job.

4. Ridiculously awkward pairings as usual such as P. Diddy and Kate Beckinsale? Why? I don't get it.

5. Ricky Gervais - enough said.

United States of Tara So I was able to see the first two episodes of this show.... and all I have to say is that you better watch it this week when it premieres. I don't want to give anything away, but Toni Collette is a fucking genius. She can not be stopped. She will definitely be nominated next year for sure.
p.s. Print sets are being sent out in the morning everyone, just as a reminder. If you don't receive by Friday of this week, please shoot me an email.

rad person of the day!

I've been a huge fan of Tobias Faldt, about two years now. There is something really beautiful and captivating about his imagery and juxtapositions. Perfect work to be looking at in the beginning of the new year and to feel inspired. Take a look at his work.

the proposal.

So, I'm not gonna lie. I love a Sandra Bullock movie. There is something about her that I just can't get enough of. The Lake House (which I liked to call, Speed the romantic years since it was her and Keanu again) made me cry a whole lot. Anyway, this movie as cheesy as it will probably be looks great. Ryan Reynolds of course is showing off that bod of his, like he always do. Trust me, I'm not complaining. Directed by Anne Fletcher, who did Step Up and 27 Dresses. Oh, and Betty White. HELLO!

move along.

Sorry for the lack of posts this week. The apt has been kind of crazy since I'm having a new person move in. But I'm taking a little break from throwing things out, organizing and moving furniture to update my loyal readers of photo life.

Lesley Martin is probably one of the coolest people ever. She also happens to be book publisher for Aperture. I went to the offices before the holidays and spent some time with her and took some photos. She was a really really great subject, even though like most of the people I'm photographing for this project, they aren't TOOO thrilled to be in front of the lens. The Edited project will be going on hiatus in a few weeks, as I'm preparing for the show of it and want to get started on some new work to freshen things up.

So also during holiday time, I wrote about how Geo, Alexis and Sophia came over for dinner and photos. This is the first real photo I've taken of Geo that is something I actually wanted for myself, and not some kind of press for him. He normally doesn't have a mustache so I'm really glad I was able to document it. Yeah, I love this photo a lot.

So my shooting schedule is pretty out of control starting tomorrow. I can't really talk about any of it, just yet, that old hush hush thing. However, celebrity, fashion and music all are involved in the next few days. So busy busy busy.

p.s. I won't have cable until tuesday in my new room, and this makes me kind of sad. Oh well.

p.p.s. I just am getting acquainted with google reader, and saw I have 193 subscribers just on that, so thanks everyone, this is great. Keep on reading, and tell your friends! Also, like I always say, let me know if there is anything you want seen in the blog more often. I really do enjoy keeping this.

back and better than ever.

Ah, so back to life. New Year, new shoots. Things are already picking up pace very very fast and I couldn't be happier about it. The lull of the holidays was starting to get to me. I'm always at my happiest when I'm working as much as possible. Let Let and I are in the process of trying to get another roommate which means, no more go-sees at the apt. So no more men prancing in and out like they used to. I'm looking to start renting out a studio outside of here in the next few months and I'm excited about that.

So, for all those who bought the last print set, I will be mailing them all out on Monday. Was just waiting to get as many in first, before I start packing them up. There are still 10 left, so if anyone is interested get on it. 50$ can be sent via paypal to ryan@ryanpfluger.com.

I was in the clinic yesterday for about 4 hours. The tonsillitis came back. It's been awhile, and I definitely was not happy to have it come back. I slept about 18 hours on Sunday. Not that I'm very surprised as the winter is usually the time it comes out in full force. Oh well. Missing my boy Nate as always. I don't have that many close friends here in NY. Or at least ones that I can count on. This boy I can count on for anything... just wish he wasn't so far away.

TELEVISION TIME

The Biggest Loser is back already! Only 3 weeks since the finale of the last season, and now the biggest cast yet! Totally great, although not so into the twist of sending so many people home this season.

Nip/Tuck Oh man, this show really knows how to be ridiculous and I love it. Sean is in a wheelchair, Christian has breast cancer, there is foreshadowing of Christian and Liz having some kind of relationship? I can't get enough. I'm so glad it's back and can't wait for Portia to be back on as well.

There are so many good premieres coming up that I really can't contain myself....

p.s. I feel like I repeat myself sometimes on here.... like a few weeks later.... I apologize, i have the same recurring thoughts sometimes, and it's hard to keep track when you are blogging everyday

Flashback Monday!!!

I really did love a bowl cut when I was a kid. And those Harry Potter glasses never got old. I am doubling the fun this week, because I'm late in updating this. I was in the hospital yesterday (look at tuesdays post for explanation), so I am just getting around to updating now. Anyway, I'd like attention to be paid to the above photo. Pink socks, purple shirt, neon green fanny pack.... oh how the homosexual in me was waiting to come out. Also surrounded by cowboys? Amazing. I'm with my cousin Jess in this photo who I love a whole bunch and wish I got a chance to see her more often than I do. It's been quite some time since I've seen her. For now, I have memories of tie dye, fanny packs and cowboys.

rad person of the day!

New year, new rad people. I've been obsessed with Martien for quite some time. I find her work so natural and elegant. I love her portraits of Celine Dion and Ryan Reynolds. Anyway, start off the new year by looking at her beautiful work. Thats what I think.

MARTIEN MULDER PHOTOGRAPHY

Friday, January 2, 2009

And so it starts.

So, a new year has arrived. New goals. New relationships. New heartache. There is a lot to look forward to and the unknown to be scared of. I've never been good at life planning or prediction for myself. Always surprised at the outcome of things. Despite trying not to, I constantly second guess myself. Is this decision the right one for my career, for my love-life or lack there of, my finances and numerous other things. My only real "resolution" for the year, is to stop second guessing things. To allow life to take it's course, and to run at it with full force.

As usual I am up early. But for the first time in two weeks, I am being productive. Holiday time is officially over for me. Back on the ball. I'm also sure this year will bring new and more attractive men then ever. That is one thing I am sure of. I am also starting a new body of work today, that I will start revealing in a few weeks. My website will also be updated this weekend with some new images from some of my last magazine shoots. I also have two new clients that I'm pretty excited to do some work for.

So, that is that. Oh and Nip/Tuck, The Closer and LOST all starting soon. Life is damn good.
